Keyword research means finding the words your customers type into Google, then choosing the best one for each important page of your website. For a local business, the best keywords are usually specific: a service plus a location.
Step 1: List the pages that make money
Start with the pages that bring calls, bookings or sales: the home page, service pages, product pages and location pages. Blog posts, “About” and “Contact” pages come later.
Step 2: Brainstorm like a customer
For each page, write down how a customer would search. Add common modifiers:
- Location: in indore, near me, area names
- Cost: price, cost, charges
- Quality: best, top, affordable
- Type: emergency, online, for small business
Step 3: Check that people really search it
Type your idea into Google and look at the autocomplete suggestions, “People also ask” and “Related searches”. If Google suggests it, real people search it. Google Ads Keyword Planner can give approximate monthly searches.
Step 4: Choose one main keyword per page
Each page gets one main (primary) keyword and 2–3 related (secondary) keywords:
| Page | Main keyword | Related keywords |
|---|---|---|
| /services/root-canal/ | root canal treatment in indore | root canal cost indore, painless root canal |
| /services/braces/ | braces treatment in indore | braces cost indore, orthodontist indore |
Step 5: Avoid keyword cannibalisation
If two pages target the same main keyword, they compete with each other and both rank worse. Give every page its own focus. This list of “page → main keyword → related keywords” is called a keyword map.
What makes a good keyword?
- It matches what the page offers (intent).
- It can bring customers, not just readers (business value).
- Real people search it (demand).
- You can realistically compete for it (competition).
Next step: use your keyword map to write better titles, descriptions and headings for each page.
